Target Audience and Consumer Behaviors
Everyone knows the purpose of a soda, lottery, candy or snack machine – to provide a convenient way to purchase tickets, snacks and beverages. However, not everyone understands how a machine can attract certain key demographics. Some people will use a vending machine and pay more for a product simply because they don’t want interaction with other people.
In Japan, you can find a vending machine almost anywhere, even in the most rural areas. The Japanese will often prefer to place money in a machine and pay a little more, even if a store sells the same product for less and is located in the same area. The phenomenon is explained by the fact that people like convenience, and in some cases, may even prefer the tactile sensation of the buttons.
A machine doesn’t just provide a product; it is a complex piece of machinery that invokes the desire for a specific product. The design of the machine can make a significant impact on whether or not a person will purchase something from the machine. The location of the machine also affects the total sales of the product and perhaps your client has used a vending machine service in the past with no luck. You need to express that the location and design of the machine is just as important as the machine itself. If you can express this in a sentence or two, then a client that has had a poor experience in the past might be willing to give it a second chance.
Your client knows the target audience of his customers. You can use this to your advantage if you also know the target audience. If the client serves mainly teenage customers, then you can briefly discuss how using a machine to sell additional products works well because teenagers tend to be more impulsive than older customers. Vending machines also provide a way for people with lots of change to buy lunch without feeling insecure about providing a convenience store clerk two dollars in dimes. Both the teenager and the person that has too much change can be considered a target audience. Your client likely has several target audiences; the key is to explain to your client why a vending business can help bring in additional customers that meet specific needs. Potential clients may feel that a vending machine would be unnecessary in a grocery store, but studies have shown repeatedly how people still use vending machines even if a cheaper option is available.
Going back to the example of vending practices in Japan. It’s not uncommon to see five or six machines lined up along a street that all sell basically the same products. The target audience in these examples is the impulsive patron. Japan understands the psychology behind vending behavior better than anyone. When you give someone one or two choices they can focus in and choose the item they want most, what often happens is that they decide to forego a purchase because they can make a decision quickly. By providing several machines, an investment in time is made. The patron often purchases something if only to justify the time spent staring at the different machines. This is a good case for why your client should install more than one type of vending machine in a single location. Work this fact into your elevator speech and include an example using their target audience to convince the potential client of the value of your business.
Your plan to perfecting your elevator speech should have a basic outline that accomplishes the following goals:

  • Create a pitch that fills a need.
  • Resolve concerns and alleviate reservations about installing a machine.
  • Talk about your company’s reputation.
  • Accommodate the target audience and discuss consumer behavior.
  • Discuss vending machine options.
  • Practice makes perfect.

Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch for Healthy Vending: Filling a Need

Any conscientious vendor machine owner understands the importance of developing that perfect elevator speech. A persuasive speech can make the difference between growing your business and stagnation. Figuring out your elevator pitch requires a systematic approach and careful thought along with practice. Great salesmen don’t simply walk into a situation without a game plan.
Developing your elevator pitch is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do for your company. However, once you nail down the specifics, you can begin to build your vending machine business and bring in profits. You may only have 30 seconds to explain and sell your product, so make sure your elevator speech is to the point, persuasive and effective. The elevator speech is the key to getting that crucial first meeting to expand your business.
Create an outline for each of the elements of your speech can greatly improve your success. Your plan should have a basic outline that accomplishes the following goals:

  • Create a pitch that fills a need.
  • Resolve concerns and alleviate reservations about installing a machine.
  • Talk about your company’s reputation.
  • Accommodate the target audience and discuss consumer behavior.
  • Discuss vending machine options.
  • Practice makes perfect.

We will be covering the above six points in a series of blog post. You can click on the links to get to the rest. Let’s talk about the first now.

Filling a Need

One of the first steps to developing your elevator pitch is to find out what your clients want from you. Obviously, you know that you sell products available from a vending machine, but why would a school or business want to install your machines on their property? Before you can expand your business, you need to be able to convince your potential clients of the value that can be gained by installing a machines. Along with filling a need for a client, you must also assuage any fears the client may have. Paying attention to your prospect can help you to ascertain any reservations they may have.
The trick for showing how installing a vending machine will fill a need is to go beyond the obvious. Catch their attention in your very first sentence by telling them something they did not already know. Everyone knows that a vending machine dispense products like snacks, sodas, lottery tickets and consumer products, so don’t waste time telling your prospective client what they already know. The moment you start telling them what they know, you lose their attention and the contract is likely already lost.
Instead, focus on how a vending machine will increase value for their company. Start with a leading question, such as, “Were you aware that a vending machine can increase consumer spending and confidence in your company?” When your client answers, you can begin a conversation about how a vending machine can keep a customer in a store longer by providing food and beverages without having to leave the lot.
Each business that you approach is going to have different needs. A law firm may want a vending machine in the lobby, or may have concerns that a vending machine could look tacky. You need to develop a different elevator pitch for each company you plan to approach. While many of the same points may be the same with each company, you should tailor your speech to the specific industry you plan to target. For example, if you were targeting a law firm, you could state that installing a machine make your clients feel at ease and help relax anxious clients waiting in the lobby.
Before you can start talking about your company, offer a discount or discuss the merits of why a vending machine is good for business, you need to get the clients attention. This can be accomplished by telling the potential client something they didn’t already know. It opens up their curiosity and instantly puts you in a position of authority, since you provided an insight into the vending machine business that clearly sets you apart from other vendors.
Create a one sentence question or statement that makes their ears perk up and listen. When completing this stage of the sales pitch, create five possible opening sentences. Then, bring in four to five of your associates and give the pitch. Pay attention to how they respond and ask for their feedback. Watch for nonverbal cues. If their eyes glaze over or they appear uninterested, keep searching until you find the opening line that captures their attention. Don’t underestimate the importance of the opening sentence in your perfect elevator speech.

Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch for Healthy Vending: Resolve Concerns

To perfect your elevator pitch for your healthy vending business, your plan should have a basic outline that accomplishes the following goals:

  • Create a pitch that fills a need.
  • Resolve concerns and alleviate reservations about installing a machine.
  • Talk about your company’s reputation.
  • Accommodate the target audience and discuss consumer behavior.
  • Discuss vending machine options.
  • Practice makes perfect.

This is a six-part series to help new business owners succeed. You can click on the above links to navigate through the various points. In this blog post, we will discuss the second point.

Resolve Concerns

Once you have your client’s attention, ask a question to determine what reservations the prospective client might have about installing a vending machine. Perhaps a law firm may think that a vending machine would look tacky. Maybe a local shop would worry that the vending machine would reduce sales. Schools might be concerned that the installation of a machine will get a negative reaction from parents. Each of these concerns can be mitigated once you know the potential clients worries. Resolving the clients concerns can be accomplished, if you know why the client may be against installing a machine.
The second sentence in your elevator speech should contain information that lets the potential client know that you have anticipated their concerns. This is one of the hardest parts of the elevator speech, but with enough research into your prospective client, you should be able to anticipate this need.
A school is generally going to be concerned about their students and the reactions of parents first. Given this priority, you can determine that a likely reservation on the part of the school board is whether or not the snacks and beverages will be healthy. In your second sentence, talking about the variety and choices available in a vending machine can help assuage these concerns before they even come up. Later on, when you have scheduled your meeting to talk about specifics, you can go into additional detail. At this point, you only want to let the client know that there are options.
So how do you make certain that you are answering the right question without actually talking with the client first? By spending the time to research the company and see what others in that clients industry have to say about any vending machine installed on their premises. This can be as simple as a Web search, or by cold calling companies and asking them to participate in a short two-question survey. The survey should only ask if the company has a vending machine and what is preventing them from installing one. Don’t try to sell your product at this point. This should be a relatively anonymous call with the intent on gathering information.
Once you find out why a particular industry might be against installing a vending machine, then you can get to work formulating a response to this problem. Make the answer to this problem no more than one or two sentences. Remember, you only have about 30 seconds to convince the client that a vending machine is the right choice. If you find that the company is concerned about cost, then include a sentence or two that mentions how a vending machine is an affordable investment that will not only improve company profits, but employee morale and customer satisfaction. The elevator speech must have useful information and use active speech to get the point across.

How Much Do You Need to Start Your Vending Business?

chalk-startup
Let’s be honest here. One of the initial best reasons why a vending business is a good option is because it doesn’t require a whole lot of capital to get started.
Any business venture requires some start-up money, but many businesses require thousands upon thousands of dollars for start-up costs. This isn’t the case with local vending businesses. Regardless of how little or how much someone has to get started, it is generally possible to invest in or even operate long term with a handful of machines.
Before you get right into business, here are some cost-related things to consider:

How Much Do Machines Cost?

Some of the basic, gumball machines can be purchased for only a few hundred dollars.   But remember the two old adages for buyer beware advice, “you get what you pay for,” and “things that sound too good to be true, usually are.”  There are many companies out there who simply sell machines, while other sell packages that include training programs.  It’s important to assess your own needs and experience and find the one that’s best for you.
The type of vending machine can make a big difference, too. Small gumball machines won’t deliver more than $50 or so each month. You’d need a modest army of these machines to build up a good, monthly revenue. In the same vein, coin-only snack and drink machines miss out on the growing population of people who don’t carry cash. Health-conscious people won’t pick out snacks that they can’t assess in terms of nutritional value, either.

How Much Does Stock Cost?

Those who want to run their own vending businesses will need stock to fill up their new machines. The cost of filling up these machines obviously depends on the type of product that is being used. Gumballs, candy and small toys can be very affordable when purchased in bulk. Popular snacks, canned drinks, bottled drinks and other similar products can also be quite cheap and can generally be purchased at discounted rates when bought in bulk. Certain snacks can be more costly than others, but shopping around for the lowest prices and buying larger quantities at once can help new business owners get the lowest prices.
Bags of chips can be a very interesting learning experience, for example. Shop your local big-box retailer and you may find two different sizes of “snack bag” chips – commonly 1 ounce and 2 ounce bags. They may look the same, but their per-unit price will be very different, which makes a big difference to your own bottom line.

How Much Does Rent Cost?

Many business owners do want something out of the deal from those who place their machines on their properties. This is only fair, particularly with machines that use electricity. Luckily, many business owners don’t charge a lot for this, and a lot of them won’t ask for any money up-front. Instead of charging a flat rate, business owners will typically agree to a percentage of the sales, so machine owners usually don’t have to worry about paying for anything until they start making a bit of money from their machines as well.
Does the idea of commissions and rents frighten you a bit? The great news is that the majority of the locations you’ll find in your area won’t ever bring them up! Modern vending machines use very little energy and won’t impact the company’s bills, so the concept of paying commissions and rents is fairly outdated. A good vending training program will teach you how to minimize the impact of commissions on your bottom line.

New Fit Pick Healthy Vending Program Unveiled by NAMA

Fit Pick, a popular healthy vending program established by the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA), receives new guidelines and features today, according to attendees of the NAMA OneShow 2014.

NAMA-FitPick-Logo

The vending industry is proud to stand behind its set of nutritional values and guidelines that make it easier for vending machine consumers to understand the nutritional information related to each purchase option. With the increasing popularity of vending machines being placed throughout the country, understanding the value of each snack or drink’s potential benefit or detriment is very important.

These new standards and guidelines align with First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to promote better childhood nutrition through the updating of the USDA Smart Snacks in Schools standards. “We are proud to offer healthy and natural vending business opportunities to people who are as passionate about better living as we are,” says Randy Francis, President and CEO of Vend Tech International. “When you see the country and the industry moving so solidly towards the direction and belief that we’ve held for some time, you know that you’re doing right by the communities we are involved with.”

The new Fit Pick standards changes include:
» Nutrition standards: Fit Pick for workplaces has adopted new nutrition guidelines, featuring absolute value requirements that are easy for operators and consumers to understand. Fit Pick Select for schools, hospitals and other locations has adopted the USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrient standards, helping ensure the program is approved in all health-oriented settings. SEE CHARTS BELOW
» An online Nutrition & Wellness Center at fitpick.org.
» Revised program materials. Improved sticker and clings for vending machines, micro markets and cafeterias, among other marketing materials, are available.
» Fit Pick brand guidelines.
» Nutrition experts: To explain the new guidelines, NAMA has assembled a Nutrition Advisory Council of outside nutrition experts and influencers from leading universities and health organizations. The association also has added a frontline perspective with NAMA’s Healthy Vending and Micro Market Leadership Committee’s input.

In addition to the above nutrient standards, any food sold in schools must meet at least one of the following four criteria:
» Be a “whole grain-rich” grain product;
» Have as the first ingredient a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy product, or a protein food;
» Be a combination food that contains at least ¼ cup fruit and / or vegetable;
» Contain 10% of the Daily Value (DV) of a nutrient of one of the nutrients of public health concern in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber).*

Healthy Vending Business Model: Why it Makes Sense

Anyone who wants an interesting and lucrative business should own a local healthy vending company. The food industry is becoming revolutionized by the new emphasis on healthy snacks. You should take advantage of this change by promoting healthy vending machines. Everyone uses these machines in various public places from colleges to grocery stores. It is a business opportunity that is guaranteed to provide steady profits. At the same time, you will promote a healthy lifestyle for adults and children. It makes perfect sense to take part in the healthy vending machine business.
The vending business is always thriving, but it needs a few changes. Obesity, overeating and food-related illnesses are major problems in developed countries. Modern schools need healthy vending machines that encourage kids and young adults to avoid unhealthy sweets. In schools and grocery stores, many foods are full of excessive salts and sugars that provide few or no nutrients. Once people get hooked on sugar, they get addicted to eating poorly for the rest of their lives. Young people should be exposed to healthy snacks wherever they sit down to eat. They can only get nutrients from healthy snacks, especially the ones made in good taste. When they eat well, they think more clearly, study longer and feel better about their bodies.
The vending machine itself is going through better changes. More machines are being equipped with top-notch technology like credit card terminals and LCD screens that display product ads. The best machines have touchscreen features that show nutritional information to anyone who wants to know. With these new changes, the vending industry is guaranteed to remain lucrative in the next few decades.
Over the past 30 years, the healthy vending machine has been introduced to the public with positive results. More people are realizing the benefits of eating and drinking healthy. When people walk into a snack area, they should not feel pressured to buy unhealthy products. People should be able to eat well while saving money and promoting good health. That is why it is always a good idea to consider a career as the owner of a vending company.

Consumers Demand Healthier Vending Machine Snacks

The demand for vending machines that offer healthy snacks and healthy drinks is beginning to grow all across the country. Lawmakers at the local, state and national level are attempting to make the public aware of the benefits of eating healthy foods. Schools, corporations and businesses are removing vending machines that feature high fat and sugary snacks from their premises and demanding healthy vending options. This changing trend is contributing to the increase in the healthy vending business. This untapped market is currently expanding to meet the increased demand for healthier snacking alternatives. Vending services are reacting to the changing trends in snacking by replacing traditional vending machine options to meet consumer preferences.

Sticking to a Healthy New Year's Resolution

93490365

One of the best New Year’s resolutions to make is one that leads to a life of better health. Modern day food choices make it easy to slip into unhealthy habits; with an abundance of readily available food that’s fairly inexpensive, it’s no surprise that many people struggle in the battle between their taste buds and pant size. A New Year’s resolution is a perfect way to start slimming down, shaping up and feeling great from top to bottom. However, many people start strong but lose their momentum in the first few weeks. Sticking to a healthy New Year’s resolution might seem a little tough at first, but having a strategy can ironically make staying true to the resolution a piece of cake.

Start With the Basics

The absolute best place to start down a healthy path is at home. This is also the most difficult hurdle for some, and it’s easy to understand why. Either they push themselves too hard or they don’t push hard enough. This early first step is all about finding the sweet spot.
It doesn’t take much to start strong. Instead of giving too much leniency or being too strict, just make each day a tiny bit healthier than the last. This is the secret to developing momentum. While it might not seem like much at first, two weeks of small changes will add up to significant results. Simple changes like eating steamed vegetables with breakfast or passing on the free donuts at work are what separate the people that slim down from the people that can’t seem to cut the fat.

Spotting the Weak Links

Simple changes are the cornerstone of transitioning from unhealthy to healthy. For example, think about the difference that healthy vending machines can make. Where the average person might be okay with cookies and soda for a snack, healthy vending machine options can both make the transition easier and provide more complete fuel for the day’s needs. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find healthy vending. In these cases, it’s best to investigate a few healthy vending companies and find out whether or not they have any machines nearby.
This same mentality can be translated to every source of snacks and meals. By simply looking for companies that are wholeheartedly based around better health, it will become far easier to develop both the attitude and habits of a healthy individual.

Constant Improvement

The final part of sculpting a more healthy lifestyle and physique is to become a person that’s oriented around making improvements whenever possible. It’s not enough to just go to the gym a little bit more or abstain from candy bars; learning and training one’s self is an ongoing process. It won’t be finished in one week or one month. It will continue on for years, but that doesn’t mean that it will take years to get healthy. With that said, the secret of being and staying healthy is understanding that health is one of the most worthy long-term goals that anyone can make with their life. It is fully worth the difficulty, and it gets far easier with time. What was once a difficult chore soon becomes an enjoyable, rewarding lifestyle.
