This individual doesn’t have to be in the same industry as you, or have the exact same experience; in fact, an outsider’s perspective is often more helpful. Think of all the benefits a mentor could offer you: knowledge of the costs and risks associated with starting a business, suggestions on target markets, advice on writing up a business plan… the list goes on. 

You should be prepared to grow.

While every business owner hopes their venture will be successful, sometimes we lull ourselves into a false sense of security, believing that we have a long time until our business will start to grow. It’s always advisable to follow the three-times rule: Be prepared to scale up if your business suddenly tripled in size. That means having access to the right people and the right equipment to handle the increased workload. You just never know when things might take off for you. 

You should pay for what you need.

When starting a business, it can be difficult to justify up-front costs like the cost of software, equipment, vehicles, etc. But it’s important that you have the right tools on-hand to be able to do the job. Trying to save money by short-changing yourself is never a good idea. Over the course of your business’s life, those early investments will pay off tenfold.  

You should ignore the naysayers.

There’s always going to be someone doubting you—even if it’s just that little voice inside your head. When starting your business, it’s vitally important that you stay laser-focused on your goal and ignore any naysayers or doubters. Keep in mind why you started the business in the first place, and continue to believe in yourself.
