Healthy Snacks & Food

Clean-Eating Programs Gain Popularity

It’s no secret that America is facing an obesity epidemic. More than two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, and those numbers have been growing steadily over the past several years. We see unhealthy snacks everywhere, even when we try to eat healthier foods and exercise. To make matters worse, scientists recently discovered that sugar actually is more addictive than cocaine. When our only convenient options are junk foods, it’s easy to fall back into eating it again and again, especially when healthy food decisions are inconvenient or not available.

Thankfully, things are starting to look up for the health of our nation. Healthy snack vending and clean-eating programs have been gaining popularity across the country. People are eager to try healthy food vending or other alternative food choices. By changing the things that we eat, we can lose weight, feel more energetic, and even find relief from some health conditions.

Healthy Snack Vending

The focus of healthy snack vending is to provide convenient foods that aren’t loaded with added sugars or preservatives. The items should be easy to eat on the go but also provide balanced nutrients, rather than just empty calories. It isn’t always easy to select a healthy snack option when your choices are limited.  A healthy snack should have a reasonable number of calories. Snacks should be light, yet energizing.

Many people view healthy snacks as:

  • Low in sugar ~ Ideally, a person will eat no more than 25 grams of sugar per day. Keeping in line with that, a healthy snack should contain about 5 grams of sugar or less. It’s important to avoid artificial sweeteners and opt for something more wholesome.
  • Low in fat and no trans-fat ~ Fat should comprise 20–30% of your diet. Leave room in your diet for healthy fats such as avocados by choosing snacks that are low in fat.
  • Low in sodium ~ The average adult should consume no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day. Packaged foods can be very high in sodium, so healthy food vending options will provide fewer than 240 milligrams, or 10% of the daily allowance.
